Needles Highway, South Dakota

This is Needles Highway and it is inside Custer State Park. This highway is 14 miles long and the whole ride is like these pictures you see. These formations are granite and they are billions of years old.

Governor Peter Norbeck, who was governor of South Dakota from 1921 to 1936, mapped out this entire highway on foot and on horseback. The construction was finished in 1922. In a few of these pictures you can see the Eye of the Needle and the tunnel.

The eye was formed over millions of years by wind, rain, freezing, and thawing. The tunnel looks really small but there are tour buses that manage to go through it. It scared me when I went through it. I was afraid I was going to scrap the side of the walls. This highway is magnificent and I hope ya’ll go visit it. Enjoy the pictures.
